Nephi Unfinished after Ch. 1 y Evie Goettl

Nephi Unfinished

by Evie Goettl

I am so grateful for my daughter, Evie Goettl, who created a new, modern vision of who Nephi was. Her artistic skill is well-practiced and well beyond her years. I personally have not been able to find or create a visual that accurately portrays the person I have been thinking so much about while writing the book. I should have known a latter-day youth would be able to bring him to life in an inspired way.

Purchase a print

Modern vision

of a young hero

Book of Mormon videos

Still shots have been included in the book (by permission) because I want you to see Nephi as a fellow seeker of Christ, full of modern insight and helpful collaboration. I want you to recognize that the source of Nephi’s power was Christ’s interaction with him and Nephi’s desire to work for Christ. I want you to see him imperfect, unfinished, and from a fresh viewpoint.

Nephi’s collective experiences colored his outlook with brushstrokes unique to him. Each smear and stain informed his future choices with a valuable perspective that cannot be replicated in someone else. Our unique perspective is also valuable and useful to our Savior.

We are in process and unfinished. We have gaps in our faith. Our Savior will continue to refine us for our benefit and the benefit of our families. Refinement is easiest when we willingly participate in change, repent often, and deeply integrate the gospel of Christ into our lives.

It's Natalie's 21st birthday today. We got to go visit her in Bend, OR this weekend to celebrate. It was such a glorious spring day walking along the river with her boyfriend Oliver (awesome guy!) We've been working nonstop remodeling the new house, so time away to focus on the girls was wonderful!

Natalie is well into her Biology major at OSU on the Cascade campus. She's doing a minor in Illustration as well. She just landed a job working as a TA next term. And of course, she has decorated her apartment to be so cute!

Natalie has such great style. Though she has been trying to convince me to put orange tile in the new house, which I am not brave enough to do!

This summer I spent sometime in the Alpine Loop of Colorado.

Though the journey of discipleship can appear long and treacherous at first, we can continue on the covenant path one step at a time. 🤍

I know it doesn't look the way you would expect, but this staircase is one of my favorite valentine gifts. All day Saturday, Chris and I were working on the demo of our new house.

We have been disagreeing about my design plan for this staircase. But late at night on Valentine's Day, after all day of hard demo, Chris was making it happen for me. He was mapping out angles, reworking the framing, smoothing out all the details I can't seem to picture in my head, reinforcing it the Christopher way. It's nowhere near done, but the foundation is there.

A staircase is what love feels like: reliable, sturdy, elevating, full of beautiful potential, caring about the other person more than yourself.

Chris and I will be moving to our new house just northwest of Sherwood sometime in May or June. It will take a while till the house is move-in ready, but we're getting there.
